Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Tuesday embarked on an unscheduled five-hour working tour of the state’s coastal towns, warning developers against flagrant violations of physical planning regulations along the riverine corridor.

Sanwo-Olu, who visited Ibeshe, Kare, Inagbe, and Ilashe in the company of his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the State Executive Council, described the coastline as being littered with “disjointed buildings” erected in breach of safety rules.

“We are bringing order, sanity, and repossession to redefine livelihood in these communities. There has been a lot of abuse of physical planning approvals and complete disregard for approved setbacks from the ocean banks. People have taken their developments beyond these lines in violation of safety regulations,” the governor said in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Physical Planning and the Lagos State Building Control Agency would return for a full enumeration of violations, which would guide the government’s final decision.

“Our final decision will include how we regularise, grant titles, and ensure locals are not disadvantaged. Life will be restored to these neighbourhoods to boost tourism potential along this stretch. The government will be a strong enabler for these opportunities,” he added.

During the tour, Sanwo-Olu also inspected a 30-megavolt-ampere electricity station built by the state government in Ilashe, which he formally handed over to EKO Disco, with instructions to connect the communities to the national grid.

He further emphasized the need to preserve the state’s coastal future, noting that engagements with traditional rulers had already begun.

“This is our note of caution to those who have done things wrongly along this corridor: government will come and correct it. We will pursue a win-win solution,” Sanwo-Olu warns.
