Medical professionals have warned that millions of Nigerian women may be endangering their lives by disregarding regular health evaluations, emphasizing that early identification is crucial in averting reproductive and midlife health issues.

During the SYNLAB Nigeria Women’s Health Webinar, Consultant Lifestyle Physician, Dr. Eniola Afolabi-Obe, elaborated that hormonal changes during midlife can commence as early as the mid-30s, significantly impacting women’s physical and emotional health.

“Perimenopause and menopause influence energy levels, sleep, cognitive function, and mood, while also elevating the risks of osteoporosis, cardiovascular ailments, and certain cancers. Unfortunately, a majority of women face this transition unprepared,” she stated, encouraging women to participate in preventive screenings such as bone density assessments, cholesterol evaluations, mammograms, pap smears, and hormone analyses.

Consultant Gynecologist, Dr. Waliyat Jolayemi, pointed out that disorders such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), diabetes, thyroid irregularities, and hormonal imbalances frequently remain unrecognized because their manifestations  erratic menstrual cycles, shifts in mood, variations in weight, and challenges with fertility are frequently dismissed as “normal. ”

“Diagnostic assessments are essential for early recognition, screening, and management of various health conditions. Much illness remains concealed due to the absence of initial symptoms,” Jolayemi remarked.

The specialists concurred that while medical assessments are vital, lifestyle choices  including a balanced diet, consistent physical activity, stress control, and sufficient sleep  are equally significant for ensuring long-term health.

They urged Nigerian women to adopt a proactive approach, monitor their cycles and symptoms, and refrain from normalizing abnormalities. “Take control of your health,” they recommended, “as early detection can preserve lives and enhance quality of life at every stage, from fertility to menopause. ”
