16 PULL UP FOR VC ROLE AT EKITI STATE UNIVERSITY
Sixteen candidates are reportedly vying for the position of Vice-Chancellor at Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, marking a competitive selection process for one of the state’s top academic leadership posts.
According to sources in the state’s higher education sector, the list of aspirants emerged following a call for applications from the university’s governing body. The opening of the application window has drawn interest from internal and external candidates alike, reflecting the prestige and strategic importance of the role.
Observers note that the competition comes at a time when the university is navigating several challenges: securing funding, improving academic standards, upgrading infrastructure, and enhancing its national profile. The incoming Vice-Chancellor will inherit these responsibilities and will be expected to drive transformation across campus.
At present, the university’s governing council is finalising the screening criteria, which reportedly include academic distinction, leadership experience, administrative competence, and a clear vision for the institution. Short-listing of six to eight candidates is expected, followed by Interviews and eventual approval by the state government, which holds the power of final appointment.
While the list of names is yet to be formally published, stakeholders say that many of the aspirants include current heads of departments, deputy vice-chancellors, and senior academics from both within EKSU and other institutions. The competitive field suggests a strong desire among the academy to steer the university into a new phase of growth.
As the process proceeds, the university community — including students, staff and alumni — will be closely watching the selection, hoping the next Vice-Chancellor will address longstanding issues such as infrastructure deficit, funding gaps and academic quality.
The governing council is expected to announce the short-list within the next few weeks, ahead of the final appointment and swearing-in ceremony.
