A tricycle operator was killed and two others sustained injuries on Wednesday in a multiple-vehicle crash at Ekoro Junction inward Ile-Iwe, Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, which involved a six-tyre trailer, a Honda Pilot, a Toyota Camry, and an unregistered tricycle.

According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, the accident occurred when the fully loaded trailer suffered a mechanical brake failure, causing the driver to lose control and crush the tricycle before colliding with the other vehicles.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the calamity was triggered by a mechanical brake failure in the fully loaded trailer. The vehicle, in its uncontrollable descent, crushed the tricycle beyond recognition before colliding with a Honda Pilot and vaulting over the median into a Toyota Camry,” Taofiq said in a statement on Wednesday.

LASTMA personnel arrived promptly at the scene, rescuing two victims who were trapped in the wreckage, while the tricycle operator was confirmed dead on the spot.

“The area was immediately cordoned off to prevent secondary incidents and ensure smooth emergency operations. The deceased and the injured were later conveyed by police officers to the General Hospital, Ile-Epo, for medical attention and documentation,” the statement added.

Traffic along the corridor was diverted through Iyana-Meran and Ajasa Command to ease congestion, while the damaged vehicles were towed to the police station for investigation.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as both tragic and preventable, blaming it on poor vehicle maintenance and excessive speed.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged heavy-duty vehicle operators to conduct regular mechanical checks to avoid similar accidents.

The tragedy comes just days after two separate accidents in Oniru and along the Saapade axis of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed one life and left four others injured was reported.
