The Lawal Pedro, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State, has denied allegations that his office influenced the suspension of proceedings in the coroner’s inquest into the death of Nkanu Adichie Esege.

Reacting to reports from the May 5, 2026 sitting at the JIC Taylor Courthouse, Pedro stated that the Ministry of Justice neither directed nor requested the Coroner to halt proceedings, stressing that such decisions fall solely within the discretion of the Coroner.

He explained that the involvement of his office had been misinterpreted, noting that an invitation extended to counsel representing parties in the matter was part of routine engagement aimed at outlining the policy direction of the Attorney-General’s office on coroner’s inquests.

According to him, the meeting was also intended to foster cooperation among legal representatives and stakeholders to ensure that the inquest proceeds without unnecessary delays.

Pedro said the move was informed by past experiences, particularly the prolonged coroner’s inquest into the death of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, which highlighted the need for a more efficient process.

He emphasised that the engagement was not designed to interfere with or truncate judicial proceedings but rather to enhance coordination and ensure timely resolution in the interest of justice and affected families.

The Attorney-General urged the public to disregard claims suggesting otherwise, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to upholding due process and the proper administration of justice in Lagos State.
