At least three people have been killed after suspected rival cult groups clashed in Agwan Jukun, a community on the outskirts of Makurdi in Benue State.

The violence reportedly started on Sunday night and spilled into the early hours of Monday, triggering panic among residents. Many fled their homes as businesses shut down abruptly.

Witnesses said the attackers struck around 8 p.m., appearing organized and deliberately targeting specific individuals.

“They came in and went straight for certain people. It wasn’t random—they clearly knew who they were looking for,” one resident, who asked not to be named, said.

The killings reportedly took place along Market Street and Wukari Street, with some residents suspecting the attackers may have received help from insiders familiar with the area.

“It looked like a coordinated operation. They may not be from here, but they seemed to have local support,” another source said.

By Monday, fear still gripped the community, particularly around the market area near a mosque, as concerns over further violence persisted.

“People are still leaving, and shops remain closed. There’s a lot of tension,” a resident added.

By Tuesday, new fears emerged over a possible retaliatory attack, with reports of youths openly carrying weapons in parts of the neighborhood.

Attempts to get a response from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful, as she had not issued any official statement at the time of this report.
