LAGOS SCHOOLS RESUME FOR THIRD TERM AS COMMISSIONER, PERMANENT SECRETARY CONDUCT MONITORING VISITS

In line with the State Government’s commitment to maintaining high standards in the education sector, the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, alongside the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite and their teams, embarked on a monitoring exercise to randomly selected schools across the State as all public and approved private schools resumed for the third term of the 2025/2026 academic session today, Monday, 4th May, 2026, in line with the State’s Unified School Calendar.

During the exercise, the Commissioner appealed to teachers, school administrators, all key stakeholders and partners to make sure that they do the right things at the right time. His words: “We must strive to build the future, for only then will we reap its rewards.

The learning period should not be compromised; every minute must count for you, teachers. We appreciate your role in nurturing our future generation, and like Oliver Twist, the State Government appeals for more dedication and extra effort from you.

He commended school administrators, teachers, and parents for their continued support and cooperation in ensuring a smooth resumption, advising parents and guardians to monitor their children and wards. “Create a relationship with the school so that obedient and dedicated children are turned out”, he said, emphasising the need for sustained adherence to all safety and regulatory guidelines while noting that consistency is key to achieving excellence in the education sector.

The Commissioner urged students to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to their studies throughout the term, encouraging teachers to continue to uphold professionalism. He appealed to school principals to use their funds judiciously and complement the State Government’s efforts where necessary.

In the same vein, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite welcomed pupils, teaching and non-teaching staff back to school for the new term, commending the concerted efforts of teachers and parents towards preparing the pupils for a successful academic term. She advised school authorities to maintain accurate records of attendance and ensure that all teaching and learning activities commence promptly.

She noted that the turnout of both teachers and students was commendable, stating that it indicated their alignment with the policies and programmes of the government in the sector.

The Permanent Secretary urged students to devote more time to their studies, especially in this third term, which is the final term of the academic session, so that they can attain good grades. While wishing all students writing WAEC this year the very best of luck, she also charged them to give the State the best WAEC result in the country.

She further implored the students to shun all vices, including bullying, stressing that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has zero tolerance for any form of harassment and bullying in schools.

Parents and guardians were also encouraged to support their wards by ensuring regular attendance, punctuality, and compliance with school rules.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring and support to schools across the State to ensure the delivery of quality education in line with global best practices.

The visit was aimed at assessing compliance with established safety protocols, evaluating general school preparedness, and observing adherence to educational standards and values. The team also reviewed the level of students’ turnout on the first day of resumption.

The schools visited by the Hon. Commissioner include Ijeshatedo Junior and Senior Secondary school, Sanya Primary school at Sanya Bus-Stop, off Apapa-Oshodi Express Way, Surulere and a few others in District IV, while the Permanent Secretary was at Agidingbi Technical College, Agidingbi in the State Education District VI.
