The Niger State chapter of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the state government to secure the release of a kidnapped doctor, warning of an indefinite shutdown of health services if their demand is not met.

The association is calling for the immediate rescue of Dr. Tony Eghagagara, Head of Medical Services at New Bussa General Hospital in Borgu Local Government Area, who was abducted at his private clinic in Wawa town on April 22, 2026.

In a communiqué issued after an emergency general meeting and signed by Chairman Dr. Mustapha Mohammed-Aliyu and General Secretary Dr. Musa Alhaji-Shehu, the doctors expressed concern over worsening insecurity and what they described as the targeted attacks on healthcare workers in the state.

They warned that failure to secure the doctor’s release within the deadline would lead to the withdrawal of services across all government health facilities in Niger State.

The association said it would no longer accept excuses, adding that it would shut down the system if its colleague is not freed within the ultimatum period.

They also called for improved security arrangements for medical personnel, including protection in high-risk areas and security escorts during duties.

NAGGMDP urged the government to take responsibility for the welfare of the abducted doctor’s family by providing immediate support.

The group referenced previous incidents of attacks and kidnappings involving health workers in the state, including the killing of a nurse at General Hospital, Kagara.

The ultimatum, which began at 12:00 a.m. on Saturday, is expected to expire at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, after which the association says it may embark on protests and withdraw services statewide.
