The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 29 suspected drug traffickers and seized 10,359.71 kilograms of illicit substances in April as part of intensified operations across the state.
State Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, describing the period as marked by decisive breakthroughs in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
According to him, the suspects—comprising 19 males and 10 females—were apprehended during targeted raids at identified drug hotspots and routine patrols.
He said the seized drugs included 9,611.69kg of cannabis, 748.02kg of psychotropic substances, 444kg of tramadol, 25.2kg of rohypnol, 242.82kg of diazepam injection, 36kg of bromazepam, and 20.2 litres of codeine syrup.
Highlighting major operations, Ofoyeju said two articulated trucks conveying 7,245kg of cannabis concealed in 483 sacks were intercepted on April 11 along the Auchi-Abuja Road. The trucks, reportedly en route from Sabongida-Ora to the Federal Capital Territory, were seized, and five suspects arrested.
In another operation on April 22, operatives intercepted a truck branded with the Nigeria Labour Congress along the Lagos-Benin Road, recovering 748.02kg of tramadol and other psychotropic substances. Two suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure.
Ofoyeju added that the command secured five convictions within the month and filed four new cases, while 89 drug-related cases remain pending before the Federal High Court in Benin City.
He noted that beyond enforcement, the agency also provided counselling services to 13 individuals, who were subsequently reunited with their families, while 12 others are undergoing rehabilitation.
The command also conducted seven sensitisation programmes to educate the public on the dangers of drug abuse.
Reaffirming the agency’s commitment, Ofoyeju said the NDLEA would continue to intensify operations and strengthen community engagement to dismantle drug trafficking networks across the state.
He commended the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), for his continued support in boosting the command’s operational effectiveness.
