The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the Military Joint Task Force (JTF) operating along the Kano-Katsina border, has recovered 67 cows and other livestock allegedly stolen by suspected cattle rustlers in Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state.

The recovery followed a joint security operation launched after authorities received credible intelligence on Wednesday that suspected rustlers had attacked villages in Gwarzo and surrounding communities.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.

According to the statement, operatives attached to the Gwarzo Police Division, alongside personnel of the Military JTF, were immediately deployed to the affected areas following reports of the attacks.

The command stated that the suspects opened fire on the security team upon sighting them, resulting in a gun duel.

However, the police said the joint operatives overpowered the suspects due to what it described as superior firepower and tactical advantage, forcing the criminals to abandon the stolen livestock and flee the area.

“Due to the superior firepower and tactical superiority of the joint team, the criminals were forced to abandon the rustled livestock and flee outside the state,” the statement read.

The recovered animals included 67 cows, one donkey and one sheep.

Police authorities said the livestock were taken to the Gwarzo Police Division for documentation and verification before being handed over to their rightful owners.

“The recovered livestock were formally handed over to their rightful owners on May 7 through the respective district heads under the supervision of the Local Government Chairman,” the statement added.

The command further disclosed that efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, noting that intelligence-driven operations and surveillance had been intensified in the affected communities to forestall further attacks.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the police operatives and military personnel involved in the operation for their professionalism and bravery.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating criminal activities threatening the safety and livelihoods of residents, particularly in rural areas.

Bakori also urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to strengthen crime prevention and proactive policing across the state.

Meanwhile, the police recalled a similar operation carried out in Ogun State on May 1, during which two suspected cattle rustlers were arrested and a stolen cow valued at ₦1.7 million was recovered in the Ifo/Ibogun area of the state.

The Ogun incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of April 30, 2026, when suspected rustlers invaded a dairy farm in Omitoro Village via Coker and stole a cow before police operatives responded swiftly to the scene.
