The Kano State Government has commended Lagos State for its outstanding achievements in transforming the transport sector, describing Lagos as a model for organized urban mobility in Nigeria and across Africa.

The commendation was made by the Kano State Commissioner for Transportation, Barr. Haruna Isa Dederi, during a study tour of the Lagos transportation system by officials of the Kano State Transport Authority (KASTA).

Dederi said the visit was a strategic step toward developing a modern, efficient, and sustainable transport system for Kano, inspired by Lagos’ comprehensive transport reforms.

He explained that the study tour was in line with the directive of Governor Abba Yusuf, who constituted a committee to reposition the Kano State Transport Authority (Kano Line) for improved service delivery.

“Lagos has become a benchmark for successful transport reform in Nigeria through its institutional restructuring, infrastructure development, technology-driven initiatives, and strong public-private partnerships,” Dederi said.

The Commissioner particularly lauded Lagos for pioneering initiatives such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, Traffic Radio, Inland Waterways and Rail Integration, and the LAMATA-led Transport Master Plan, noting that they serve as reference points for other African cities.

Receiving the delegation, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olawale Musa, expressed appreciation for Kano’s recognition of Lagos’ transport achievements.

Musa noted that Lagos’ progress in the sector is a result of deliberate planning, sustained investment, and policy consistency, which have collectively driven the state’s transport modernization efforts.

“A functional transport system remains key to economic growth and urban development,” he said, assuring the Kano delegation of Lagos State’s full support and collaboration.

He added that both Lagos and Kano face similar infrastructural challenges due to their large and growing populations, emphasizing the need for continued inter-state cooperation to address urban mobility demands effectively.

The visit, officials said, is expected to strengthen partnerships between both states and support knowledge exchange on sustainable transportation policies and practices.
