The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains calm and unshaken despite recent threats and remarks by US President Donald Trump, who redesignated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” and vowed to “go gun-a-blazing” into the country over alleged persecution of Christians.

Speaking to State House correspondents on Tuesday, Idris said the Tinubu administration is taking proactive diplomatic steps to address what he described as “misperceptions” about Nigeria’s internal security and religious dynamics.

“Mr President is calm. He’s looking at the whole situation and exploring ways to ensure the international community understands what Nigeria has been doing,” Idris said.

He stressed that Nigeria remains a diverse and faith-inclusive nation, where the constitution guarantees freedom of religion, and the federal government is committed to protecting that right for all citizens.

The minister noted that the issue with the United States had been “thoroughly discussed” at the highest levels of government, with deliberate efforts underway to correct misconceptions and reinforce Nigeria’s image as a country that values religious harmony and coexistence.

“What has happened is that we have extremists who are driving this narrative, and their desired outcome is to see that this country is divided,” Idris added.

He reiterated that the Nigerian government does not and will not target any citizen on religious grounds, pointing to recent security and governance measures as evidence of a balanced approach to national unity and protection of lives and property.

“Nigeria has Muslims, Christians, and even those who do not believe in any religion. Our constitution guarantees everyone the freedom to practice their faith without hindrance, and Mr President will continue to uphold that,” he stated.

The minister reaffirmed that President Tinubu remains focused on governance and diplomatic engagement, assuring Nigerians that the administration’s response to the situation would reflect restraint, dialogue, and commitment to national cohesion.
