OPINION: NIGERIA CANNOT SURVIVE A RELIGIOUS CIVIL WAR, STOP BURNING FIRE UNDER YOUR OWN FEET
By: Shehu Bashir Esq.
It is ironically unbelievable that, inspite of the visible experiences we have all seen around us, some people still think inviting a dog to settle a rift between two cats over a piece of meat is the right way to solve their problems.
Be careful of what you do or say today in your current circumstance, you may not be able to defend your actions or utterances when your base shifts.
People who wished for the worst for Nigeria yesterday are in dilemma today in true test of loyalty because they are currently benefiting from the nation they had earlier written off.
Emotional expression and blanket condemnation of a nation during a challenging time is not a good way to address a situation. When your anger goes away, the relics grow haywire.
It is beyond believe that anyone would attempt to incite religious violence in a very complex and complicated nation like Nigeria. It is practically impossible that we can survive as a nation should a religious civil war ensue. Even those who are wishing for balkanization will have no land to segregate.
Those who are calling for foreign aggression against Nigeria on the basis of an unproven allegation of christian genocide are not even experts in clairvoyance.
Imaginary people should stop living on the fallacy that a foreign country will come to raise their hands up in superiority. I remind you all that nobody can successfully eliminate either religion from human community.
In Nigeria of today and tomorrow, any war ignited on the basis of religion will be a forever war. It will be complicated. It will be complex. It will be endless and will be worst than what is happening in Southern Sudan. It will be an Armageddon.
If only they could see tomorrow, they would have known the true practical application of a Yoruba adage that says “it is only the beginning of the war that one can know, you can never foretell what will end the war”.
If the people of Libya had seen tomorrow, they would never have conspired against their own country. That conspiracy has ruined everything they ever had.
When a war breaks out, nothing that we have all built will stand. The homes that we built, the industries through which we survive, the petrol stations through which we refuel, the places of worship where we all show obeisance to our God, and the schools that we go to learn to keep the world going will become rubbles. Not even the farms will be able to grow crops anymore.
If you are deceiving yourself that war will bring peace or place anyone above the other, simply because a certain uncontrollable element is hoping to test the weapons in their armory in your defence, I warn you that war does not bring peace, it brings chaos and anomie.
War will bring starvation, plague, disease, sickness, destruction and most likely fasten extinction. It will be a helpless situation. There will be famine, there will be no hospitals to treat the sick, the wounded will be left to feast on by stray dogs and wolfs, it will be carnage, no one can guarantee a survival.
If you have a wife or daughter you don’t wish to become a rape victim, don’t ever wish for war. If you have a son you don’t wish to become an emergency draft-child-soldier, don’t fan the embers of war. If you have aged family members you still love to see living, don’t wish for a war.
If you still have a dream that one day, your sweat will become your sweet, do everything to work for peace. Preach for peace. Campaign for peace. Sue for peace. Discourage outrageous lies that can ignite religious hatred amongst ourselves. Stop preaching hatred and bigotry on the altar. Stop it now!
When it becomes a war, it will be lawless. No law enforcement. No legal restriction. No orderliness. No morality. No possession of any right. It will be jungle. Lands would be grabbed. Wife would be snatched and molested. People will be slaughtered. Offices will close. Boundaries would be lost. Money will lose value and become useless. Survival will be less likely. What then will you gain? Nothing.
Türkiye is arguably more advanced in military power than Israel just as Saudi Arabia may not be less advanced compared to Israel, but the two countries have been tactically avoiding direct confrontation with Israel, knowing fully well that the collateral damage will be huge.
When Saudi Arabia underrated the “small army” of the Houthis, the Houthis cleared Saudi’s doubt. The response was beyond what they expected. A lot were lost.
When Israel struck Iran, it wasn’t expecting the response it got from that attack, over thirty years of achievements were destroyed in both countries during that twelve day war.
In wars, don’t even think the opponent is an underdog that you can easily oppress and suppress with superior military weapons, there is always something much more stronger than military weapon, it is called resilience, determination, faith and hope.
With such mindset, even when you kill the body, you can not kill the principle, it will be a continuous warfare between generations and generations. Dialogue, mutual respect, tolerance and understanding are always the right approach to solving the differences between us.
So, try to free yourself from the shackles of ignorance. The right solution to national problems is dialogue and collective efforts. Anything to the contrary is self-destruct.
