TINUBU SENDS DELEGATION TO UK OVER EKWEREMADU’S IMPRISONMENT
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent out a high-level delegation to the United Kingdom to engage with British authorities over the ongoing detention of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.
Ekweremadu has been in British custody since March 2023 following his conviction in a controversial organ-harvesting case, which drew widespread attention both in Nigeria and internationally.
The delegation, led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi (SAN), met with top officials at the UK Ministry of Justice earlier today to discuss matters relating to Ekweremadu’s incarceration and possible diplomatic interventions.
After the meeting, the delegation visited the Nigerian High Commission in London, where they were received by Ambassador Mohammed Maidugu, the Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
According to diplomatic sources, the visit underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to ensuring fair treatment and due process for Nigerian citizens abroad, especially in cases involving complex international legal issues.
While details of the discussion with British authorities have not been made public, the move is seen as part of Nigeria’s broader diplomatic efforts to engage constructively with the UK on bilateral and humanitarian concerns.
Senator Ekweremadu, who served as Deputy Senate President from 2007 to 2019, remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent politicians facing legal challenges overseas.
