AFCON 2025: SALAH GOAL SECURE 1-0 WIN FOR EGYPT AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA
By: Sefiu Ajape
Egypt took a 1–0 lead over South Africa in their Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash in Agadir on Friday, thanks to a first-half penalty converted by captain Mohamed Salah.
The goal came in the 45th minute after South Africa defender Khuliso Mudau conceded a foul in the penalty area, allowing Salah to score with a left-footed shot to the centre of the goal.
Shortly after, Egypt were reduced to 10 men when Mohamed Hany received a second yellow card for a foul.
Despite being a player down, Egypt went into the break ahead, with the first half marked by disciplined defending and controlled possession.
In the second half, South Africa pushed forward in search of an equaliser, while Egypt dropped deeper and looked to hit on the counter-attack.
Bafana Bafana tested Egypt’s defence with direct balls and late runs into the box. A late VAR review for a possible South Africa penalty was overturned, with no penalty awarded.
With the result, Egypt are set to move to six points in Group B, strengthening their chances of advancing to the knockout stage.
