One person has been confirmed dead while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a fatal road accident along the Awka–Onitsha Expressway in Anambra State.

The crash occurred at the Nawfia axis, near the Enugu-Agidi Junction, and involved a Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC SUV driven by an unidentified motorist.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Saturday, the Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, Margaret Onabe, said five persons were involved in the lone crash. The victims comprised two male adults, two female adults, and one female child.

According to the FRSC, one female adult lost her life in the accident, while the remaining four occupantstwo male adults, one female adult, and one female child sustained injuries including bruises, fractures, and head trauma.

Onabe attributed the crash to suspected speed violation, tyre burst, and loss of control by the driver. She said the injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the deceased was deposited in a morgue. The damaged vehicle was also towed to the Ogbunike Police Station.

The statement partly read: “A lone fatal road traffic crash occurred on December 25, 2025, at about 09:45 hours on the Nteje–Onitsha route around AA Rano Station, Ogbunike Tollgate. The crash involved an unidentified driver of a Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC SUV. One female adult was killed, while four others sustained injuries.”

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

She urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, avoid overspeeding, and ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent avoidable crashes.

The latest incident comes weeks after a previous fatal accident at the same Nawfia axis, where six persons reportedly lost their lives in a collision involving a truck and a commercial bus, raising renewed concerns over safety along the busy expressway.
