Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has heavily criticized his former club following their shock elimination from the Copa del Rey.

Los Blancos were knocked out in the Round of 16 on Wednesday after a 3-2 defeat to second-division side Albacete. The match also marked the debut of new head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, who took over from Xabi Alonso earlier this week. Alonso was dismissed following Real Madrid’s 3-2 loss to Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final.

Real Madrid also faced the match without their star player, Kylian Mbappe.

In an interview with Radio Cope, Canizares expressed his disappointment over the team’s performance, telling the media.

“Even though I don’t want to say it, Real Madrid have absolutely failed. Arbeloa doesn’t want to use that word, but I agree with him—you have to lose a lot before you can win. To achieve success, you have to experience failure many times. Today was a complete failure, and that’s clear.”

He also criticized the club’s management, adding, “The management has been really poor all week. In football, even when things are done properly, things can still go wrong. If you don’t do them right, there’s a higher risk that problems might happen.”

Following defeats in the Supercopa final and the Copa del Rey exit, Real Madrid will now turn their focus to LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League. They currently sit second in the league, four points behind Barcelona.
