Residents of Odo-Kekere Community in Ikorodu, Lagos State, were thrown into panic on Thursday evening after a portion of a local public school building suddenly collapsed. The incident, which occurred after school hours, has been described by some locals as a narrow escape and an act of divine intervention.
According to sources, a section of the school gave way with a loud crash, drawing neighbours to the scene. First responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) quickly arrived and cordoned off the area for safety.
Preliminary reports indicate that no students were present in the classrooms at the time of the collapse. Emergency teams are conducting search and rescue operations to ensure that no staff members or security personnel were trapped in the rubble.

An eyewitness, Mrs. Boluwaji Aderinto, who lives next to the school, highlighted longstanding safety concerns raised by parents and community leaders over the school’s deteriorating infrastructure. She said, “We heard a loud crack and then dust everywhere. We thank God it didn’t happen in the morning when the children were in their desks. This is a wake-up call for the government.”
A high-level delegation from the Lagos State Ministry of Education visited the site to assess the situation. A senior ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that officers, including the Tutor General and Permanent Secretary of Education District II, are on-site to evaluate and determine the next steps.
The collapse has reignited public concern over the condition of school buildings in Lagos, prompting renewed calls for urgent renovation and structural audits across both public and private primary and secondary schools to ensure the safety of students and staff.
