Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who had previously withdrawn from the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara have made a U-turn, renewing their backing for the process.

Earlier, the Minority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma State Constituency), and Peter Abbey (Degema State Constituency) had stepped back from the impeachment move, urging their colleagues to halt the proceedings. They were soon joined by Deputy Minority Leader Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I) and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II) in withdrawing support.

However, during a press briefing on Friday, the four lawmakers stated that the governor has not provided any justification to warrant their earlier withdrawal, prompting them to reaffirm their support for the impeachment.

This development comes as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly announced their intention to proceed with the impeachment of Governor Fubara, emphasizing that his removal, alongside that of his deputy, is necessary to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the state.

The move further escalates the ongoing political standoff between the governor and the state assembly.
