The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to conduct a credible, transparent and internationally acceptable national census, anchored on effective public communication and strong inter-agency collaboration.

Idris made the assurance in Abuja while receiving the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf, who led a management delegation on a courtesy visit.

The Minister reassure that credible population data is the backbone of national development planning, noting that meaningful socio-economic policies cannot be achieved without accurate demographic figures.

He assured the NPC leadership of the full support of the Ministry and its agencies — including the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Voice of Nigeria (VON), and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) — to mobilise citizens and drive nationwide advocacy once the President proclaims a census date.

Idris emphasised that the Tinubu administration is committed to a census process that commands public confidence locally and internationally, stressing that the Federal Government is prioritising due process, legality and credibility over speed.

He reiterated that a presidential proclamation remains the legal framework for conducting the census, adding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is carefully aligning all necessary requirements to ensure the exercise meets global best practices.

The Minister also urged the NPC to continue utilising government-owned media platforms for sustained public enlightenment, while assuring that the Ministry will fully carry out its mandate of promoting government programmes and policies in the national interest.

Earlier, NPC Chairman Dr Aminu Yusuf commended the Ministry of Information and National Orientation for its consistent support and leadership in public mobilisation efforts ahead of the postponed census.

Yusuf said the Commission remains operationally prepared, with systems, logistics, ICT infrastructure and personnel continually refined to guarantee efficiency, transparency and credibility once a new census date is announced.

He further requested sustained access to government media platforms to deepen public awareness on census participation, civil registration and vital statistics, describing public trust as central to effective population management in Nigeria.
