The Nigeria Police Force has commenced disciplinary proceedings against a police officer captured in a viral social media video engaging in conduct described as inconsistent with the standards and ethics of the Force.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Force said the officer, identified as a Sergeant attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters in Ekiti State, was promptly identified and taken into custody after the video surfaced online.
The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a comprehensive psychological and medical evaluation of the officer as part of the disciplinary process.
According to the police, the assessment is a mandatory procedure aimed at ensuring that both the officer’s misconduct and any possible underlying health concerns are properly addressed in a responsible and professional manner.
Reacting to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, strongly condemned the officer’s conduct, describing it as a serious breach of the discipline, professionalism, and decorum expected of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on substance abuse and all forms of behaviour capable of tarnishing the image of the police or eroding public confidence in the institution.
Police authorities further assured Nigerians that disciplinary measures would be pursued in line with established procedures and the commitment of the Force to accountability and professionalism.
