The Peter Obi Media Office has alleged that about 600 university lecturers are making plans to rig the 2027 general elections.
The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the spokesman of the media team, Idris Zekeri.
The statement followed reports that about 600 university lecturers had endorsed President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
According to the media office, the endorsement could represent an early effort to establish and legitimise a network of partisan actors ahead of the election.
The team expressed concern over the development, particularly because university academics have frequently served as electoral officials, including returning and collation officers, during elections.
It argued that the reported endorsement of an incumbent presidential candidate by academics who could potentially be appointed to electoral duties raised concerns about possible conflicts of interest.
“The Peter Obi Media Office has become aware of reports that approximately 600 university academics have endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This development is profoundly troubling and should be recognised for what it signifies: an early attempt to build and legitimise a network of partisan actors ahead of the 2027 presidential election,” the statement read in part.
The media office further argued that the lecturers should not be viewed solely as private citizens exercising their political preferences, given the role academics have historically played in the conduct of elections.
It said their potential involvement in electoral assignments, alongside their reported endorsement of a presidential candidate, warranted closer scrutiny ahead of the 2027 polls.
