2027: I COULD NOT WORK WITH ATIKU BECAUSE OF BUHARI — BABACHIR LAWAL

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, has disclosed that African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar wanted to work with him.
Lawal said he could not work with Atiku at the time because he was serving under the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The former SGF made the disclosure in an interview with Diaspora Digital Media, explaining that he could not work with Atiku because he was not a man of divided loyalty.
According to Lawal, “Seeing me here, I wanted to work with him, Atiku. The reason that I could not work with you before was because I was working with Buhari and I’m not a man with divided loyalty.
“Now my Oga has finished and returned to Daura, I can work with you.”
Lawal also recounted his efforts to mobilise northern political figures ahead of the 2027 elections, saying he contacted former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, and other political leaders over the need to unite the North.
He said the initial plan was to support whichever presidential candidate the group eventually agreed on through bloc voting.
According to him, the group held several meetings and expanded its structure from a few members to representatives across the states.
Lawal’s relationship with Atiku later became strained following his resignation from the ADC in June 2026.
After his resignation, Lawal alleged that the party’s 2027 presidential primary was manipulated in favour of Atiku, claiming that results from various levels were rewritten to benefit the former vice president and his associates.
He also claimed to have documentary evidence of discrepancies in the collation process and said he refused to be part of what he described as a “rigging machine.”
Lawal subsequently criticised the prospect of an Atiku presidency, describing it as a continuation of what he called a “Muslim-Fulani” power monopoly.
Atiku’s camp, however, rejected Lawal’s allegations and attributed his comments to personal bitterness, arguing that the same primary process he criticised had also produced candidates aligned with him for other positions without his earlier objection.
