NLC: FG URGES WORKERS TO EMBRACE DIALOGUE OVER STRIKE

To support industrial stability in Nigeria, the Federal Government has argued that social dialogue is a preferable substitute for traditional industrial conflict settlement procedures.
The suggestion was made during the second National Labour Adjudication and Arbitration Forum in Abuja on Tuesday by the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkiruka Onyejeocha.
Attendees included representatives of labour unions such as Joe Ajaero of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Taiwo Adeniyi, President of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), and Justice Benedict Kanyip, President of the National Industrial Court.
The meeting’s goal was to support a strong and secure working relationship between employers and employees in Nigeria.
Concerns about the current minimum wage also played a central role.
The National Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) gave the federal government until October 2023 to implement the 16-point labour agreement or face a 14-day ultimatum.
Nigeria’s labour environment frequently experiences protests and industrial actions, a development that this forum feels ought to be discouraged.
