The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has finally detained former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello over alleged misappropriation of funds.

Bello was detained after he presented himself at the headquarters of the EFCC in Abuja on Tuesday.

The former governor’s detention was disclosed by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale.

Addressing journalists, Oyewale said Bello was arrested by the Commission’s chief security officer.

“It is true that we have him in our custody. The operatives of the Commission arrested him,” Oyewale said.

Sources close to the EFCC say that he went to the office with his lawyers on Tuesday and not with the current Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo.

There were insinuations last week that he was going to visit the EFCC, but the former governor’s media aides did not respond to enquiries on the information.

EFCC had on April 18, 2024, declared Bello wanted in connection with an N80.2 billion money laundering charge.

At the last hearing on November 14, the EFCC had sought adjournment to Wednesday, November 27 in the fresh case it instituted against Bello, saying the 30-day window was still running for the summons earlier issued.

The EFCC, however, admitted his co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, to administrative bail and prayed to the court for an extension of time for the 1st Defendant to appear.
