Activist Aisha Yesufu has criticized the Nigerian judiciary, accusing it of betraying both the country’s constitution and its citizens.
Speaking on Arise News in response to recent controversies surrounding court decisions and the ongoing case of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is fighting to reclaim her seat in the National Assembly, Yesufu voiced deep concern over the state of judicial integrity.
The Edo-born human rights advocate claimed that the judiciary has become a tool in the hands of corrupt politicians, failing to uphold justice or protect the rights of ordinary Nigerians.
“Our Nigerian judiciary needs to wake up. They’ve failed the system, failed the country, and even failed the oath they swore to uphold,” Aisha Yesufu declared.
She lamented that the judiciary, once regarded as the last hope of the common man, has become increasingly compromised—often ignored by institutions and manipulated by political forces.
Citing specific instances, Yesufu pointed to court injunctions, including those related to the suspension of lawmakers, that have been openly disregarded by the National Assembly.
“They didn’t listen, they didn’t care. We’re now seeing institutions picking and choosing which court rulings to obey—and that’s a serious problem,” she said.
She further alleged that politicians are now exerting significant control over the judiciary, undermining its independence.
Calling for urgent reform, Yesufu urged the judiciary to undergo internal transformation to restore credibility, independence, and true justice.
