Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has lamented the rising occurrence of disasters in Nigeria.

In a post on X on Thursday, Obi emphasized that disaster management is a vital responsibility of governance that every administration must prioritize.
The former Anambra State governor noted that the ongoing bloodshed in the country should be a source of serious concern for governments at all levels.
His comments followed the recent flood disaster in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, which claimed numerous lives.

According to him, disasters must no longer be reduced to passing headlines, adding that it was time for the government to embrace a proactive approach by investing in effective drainage infrastructure to protect the people and preserve their means of livelihood.

“My heart goes out to the families of the latest disaster who have lost loved ones and to all those injured in the tragic flood in Yola.

He described the incident as a painful reminder of the urgent need for significant investment in disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and urban infrastructure across Nigeria.
“I commend the swift response of the Adamawa State Government, the Police Command, and other government agencies involved in the rescue efforts,” he wrote.
