The Labour Party presidential nominee for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has criticized the apprehension and ongoing confinement of Omoyele Sowore by the Nigeria Police Force, referring to it as “a failure of justice and an exploitation of governmental authority. ”

In a communiqué released on Thursday, Obi expressed he was “profoundly alarmed to hear of the detention of Mr. Omoyele Sowore @YeleSowore yesterday, shortly after he willingly complied with a summons from the Nigerian Police Force. ”

“At the moment of this writing, no explicit or credible accusations have been disclosed, which further raises concerns regarding the rationale and intent behind his imprisonment. ”

Obi articulated that “his apprehension, especially under circumstances in which he approached law enforcement in good faith, should be denounced by all who uphold justice and due process. ”

Based on all evidence, there was no necessity or risk of flight that justified such severe measures.

The former governor of Anambra State voiced apprehension regarding the legality and ethical consequences of such an apprehension, stating, “To capture a citizen who voluntarily presented himself, without the public revelation of explicit, lawful accusations, is not merely a distortion of justice but a misuse of governmental authority. ”

Citing Plato, he said, “Justice in the life and conduct of the State is possible only as it first resides in the hearts and souls of the citizens.

“When individuals vested with authority behave unfairly, they corrupt not merely the legal system but also the ethical awareness of the country. ”

Obi urged the officials to operate within the limits of justice: “I consequently urge the Nigerian Police to promptly liberate Omoyele Sowore or formally accuse him in accordance with the law.”

“Anything less than this would result in a further diminishment of public confidence in the nation’s law enforcement agencies. ”

He concluded with an appeal for impartial enforcement of the law: “It is our shared responsibility to demand that the rule of law be applied to all citizens, irrespective of ideology, background, or political affiliation. ”
