The Edo State Police Command has arrested a serving police inspector and three civilian accomplices for allegedly terrorising residents of Benin through extortion, brutality, and armed robbery.

The Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Benin on Sunday. He explained that the arrest followed a viral video in which a victim accused some policemen of abducting him, seizing his phone and other belongings, and subjecting him to harassment.

Acting on the report, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, ordered an immediate investigation and the arrest of the suspects.

“On 15th August 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team successfully intercepted the suspects with a silver-coloured Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items,” Yamu said.

He confirmed that the inspector was arrested alongside his accomplices, describing their actions as shameful and criminal.

Quoting the commissioner, Yamu said: “The command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, or misconduct within the Force. Any officer caught engaging in extortion, brutality, or corruption will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted. There will be no hiding place for rogue elements within the police.”

The command urged members of the public, including the victim in the viral video, to come forward with credible information to aid investigations.

Yamu further assured residents of Edo State that the command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property, restoring public confidence, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
