The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has impounded 668 commercial motorcycles and arrested seven suspects during a week-long enforcement exercise across major parts of the state.
The operation, which began on Monday, was led by the Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Shola Adetayo Akerele, and targeted black spots including Ishaga, Balogun Bus Stop in Iju-Ishaga, Ijegun Roundabout, Iyana-Iba, Iyana-Ishasi, Igbo-Elerin, Iyana-School, Volkswagen Bus Stop along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, and Kola Bus Stop on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
According to the agency, the crackdown followed numerous complaints and distress calls over the activities of commercial motorcyclists allegedly used by hoodlums and pickpockets to rob commuters and tricycle passengers, particularly at night.
During the operation at Kola Bus Stop, Taskforce officials reportedly faced mob resistance from Okada riders and hoodlums attempting to disrupt enforcement. The officers, however, dispersed the crowd with minimal force and restored normalcy without casualties.
CSP Akerele warned that defiant Okada operators must leave highways and restricted routes or face the full weight of the law. He stressed that the enforcement was part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety, reduce crime, and protect lives and property.
“All confiscated motorcycles will be forfeited through the courts and crushed in line with state law,” he said.
The Taskforce vowed to sustain routine clean-up operations to compel compliance, curb criminal activities linked to Okada operations, and ensure a safer Lagos for residents.
