The Oyo State Government has begun the demolition of illegal structures and containers encroaching on road reserves and walkways within the Ibadan metropolis, following the expiration of a 14-day eviction notice issued to traders and occupants.

The action was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, who said the enforcement exercise underscores the state’s commitment to maintaining urban order, environmental sanity, and safety.

According to the statement, the 14-day eviction notice, served on October 13, 2025, expired on Monday, November 3, after which the government issued a reminder last week as a final grace period.

Following the expiration, a Joint Enforcement Team—comprising officials from the Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Road Transport Management Authority, the Environmental Task Force, the Nigeria Police, the Amotekun Corps, and other state security agencies—launched the demolition exercise on Monday.

The operation, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (retd.) Francis Ojomo and Iyabo Akinbode, Chief of Staff to the OYRLEA Chairperson, commenced from Airport Junction through Alakia–Adegbayi to Old Ife Road, clearing iron containers, kiosks, goods, and other makeshift structures obstructing the right of way.

Chairperson of OYRLEA, Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retd.), reaffirmed the authority’s determination to sustain a clean, safe, and investor-friendly environment across Oyo State.

“Our environment must be welcoming and safe for investors. This has always been the utmost desire of our people-oriented governor, His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on whose mandate we operate,” she said.

Justice Aderemi noted that the demolition is especially important ahead of the forthcoming commissioning of the Ibadan International Airport, and follows months of sensitisation through radio jingles and public notices.

She cautioned traders and occupants along Airport Road, Old Ife Road, and Onipepeye to vacate the cleared areas and warned that any return to the cleared setbacks or walkways will attract prosecution.

“The grace period for relocation has elapsed. Anyone found violating the directive will face the full weight of the law. There will be zero tolerance for re-encroachment,” she warned.

The Oyo State Government reiterated that the demolition exercise is part of broader efforts to enforce environmental laws, restore order to public spaces, and prepare the state for increased economic and infrastructural activity.

Traders were urged to view the enforcement drive as a final opportunity to comply voluntarily, as the state intensifies its commitment to urban renewal and environmental discipline.
