The Kano State Fire Service has called on residents to exercise heightened caution during the harmattan season to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks and safeguard lives and property.

The call was made on Tuesday during a fire prevention and public awareness exercise in Gezawa Local Government Area, organised under the Service’s ongoing Hunturu fire safety campaign.

Addressing residents at the palace of the District Head of Gezawa during the sensitisation programme, officials of the Fire Service noted that the dry conditions associated with harmattan significantly increase the likelihood of fire incidents if adequate precautions are not taken.

According to the Service, the harmattan period demands greater vigilance, especially in the handling of fire and flammable materials.

The awareness campaign, supervised by the Divisional Commander, PFS II Rabiu Mansur Sadi, centred on educating the public about simple but essential measures to prevent fires, particularly in homes, markets, and other public spaces.

Residents were cautioned against careless use of fire, advised to maintain safe cooking practices, and urged to keep flammable materials away from open flames. They were also reminded that fire prevention is a shared responsibility that requires collective effort.

The Kano State Fire Service further appealed to the public to promptly report fire outbreaks and other emergencies, stressing that early reporting can help minimise damage and save lives and property.

Members of the public were reminded to contact the Kano State Fire Service through its emergency lines — 08107888878 or 07026026400 — in the event of any fire incident or emergency.
