Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have appealed to their colleagues to halt the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

The lawmakers—Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II—made the call two days after two other legislators publicly urged restraint and dialogue in handling the impeachment process.

Earlier, Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Eyinna Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency), and Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency) had broken ranks to advise caution, stressing the need for understanding rather than escalation in the ongoing dispute between the executive and legislative arms of government.

The lawmakers made their position known during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where they advocated alternative approaches to impeachment and hinted at the possibility of reconciliation.

Speaking at the briefing, Nwankwo said appeals had been received from leaders within and outside the state, urging lawmakers to exercise leniency and reconsider the impeachment move.

He called on his colleagues to explore peaceful and constructive solutions to the crisis.

Abbey, on his part, acknowledged that the governor may have breached certain constitutional provisions but emphasized that mistakes can occur. He stressed the need to ensure that any such lapses are addressed and not repeated, rather than resorting immediately to impeachment.
