ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY: AIYEDATIWA LAUNCHES N50 MILLION AID FOR WIDOWS OF FALLEN HEROES

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has reinforced his administration’s commitment to the welfare and empowerment of widows of fallen military personnel.

As part of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day observance at the Government Cenotaph, Alagbaka, Akure, the governor announced the release of ₦50 million in interest-free microcredit loans to 120 widows and dependants of deceased servicemen.

The scheme, a key feature of Ondo State’s annual remembrance activities, is aimed at supporting beneficiaries’ businesses and enhancing their capacity to provide for their families. Loan amounts have been increased from ₦200,000 per beneficiary to between ₦450,000 and ₦500,000.

“This nationwide celebration not only honours the ultimate sacrifice of our fallen heroes but also recognises living veterans and serving military personnel committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity,” Governor Aiyedatiwa said. “Our focus is on both remembrance and empowerment, particularly for widows whose resilience continues to inspire society.”

The governor also highlighted the Emblem Appeal Fund, which had raised an initial ₦5 million, supplemented by his personal donation of one month’s salary and contributions from individuals and organisations.

He commended security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps, for their role in maintaining peace and protecting lives and property, noting that Ondo State is regarded as one of Nigeria’s safest states.

Governor Aiyedatiwa urged residents to remain vigilant while assuring that the loan scheme would continue despite prevailing economic challenges, describing it as a moral responsibility. He further called on beneficiaries to prioritise timely repayment to sustain and expand the programme for future participants.

In her remarks, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Osamaye, lauded the governor for his tangible support, describing the initiative as a significant boost to widows’ livelihoods.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Adeola Olaoye, expressed gratitude to the state government, noting that the increased loan amounts would strengthen their businesses and improve living standards. She pledged to utilise the funds responsibly and ensure prompt repayment to maintain the programme.
