Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed his excitement at the impending return of Mohamed Salah, saying he would welcome the Egypt forward even if he already had 15 attackers in his squad.

Salah is set to feature in Egypt’s third-place play-off against Nigeria in Morocco on Saturday, marking the final match of his Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

The winger’s return has drawn attention following a turbulent period at Liverpool. In early December, Salah criticized the club, accusing them of “throwing him under the bus” after being benched for three consecutive matches, and claimed to have no relationship with Slot.

Despite the controversy, Salah appeared as a substitute in Liverpool’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Brighton on December 13, providing an assist. Slot later affirmed that the club had moved past the incident.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Burnley, Slot said:

“First of all, he needs to play another big game for Egypt on Saturday. And then he comes back to us, and I’m happy that he comes back. Mo has been so important for this club, for me, so I’m happy that he’s back.

“Even if I had 15 attackers, I still would have been happy to have him back, but that’s not our current situation. So I’m happy to have him back after an important game that he still has to play.”

Salah, who scored 29 Premier League goals to claim last season’s Golden Boot as Liverpool secured their 20th English league title, has netted just four goals in the current campaign.

When asked about Salah’s availability, Slot said: “Next week. We’re in talks with him about what’s expected over there and here. But first, he needs to finish an important game on Saturday, and next week he will be back with us.”

Liverpool will face Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday before traveling to Bournemouth next weekend. After a rough patch in the league with six defeats in seven matches starting late September, Slot has steadied the team, which is now unbeaten in 11 consecutive games across all competitions.
