The Ipokia Local Government in Ogun has clarified that no election has taken place and no candidate has been selected, elected, or declared as the new Oniko of Ikolaje Idiroko, cautioning against premature claims to the throne.

In a statement on Tuesday signed by the Secretary to the Local Government, Johnson Babajide, the council noted that the stool became vacant following the death of His Royal Majesty, Oba John Olakunle Ojo JP (Afiditi II), and that the succession process is ongoing according to established customs and the Chiefs Law of Ogun State.

“The attention of the general public, residents of Ikolaje Idiroko, stakeholders, and all concerned parties is hereby drawn to the ongoing process for filling the vacant stool of the Oniko of Ikolaje Idiroko,” the statement read.

It added that, following the rotational arrangement, the Odunfa Ruling House next in line conducted its nomination exercise on February 4, 2026, at the Ipokia Local Government Secretariat under the supervision of council officials, security agencies, and family representatives.

The Odunfa Ruling House presented three nominees: Prince Olagoriye Jonah Ariori, Prince Sunday Adekanmbi Olayode, and Prince Olabowale Ade.

The council stated that the next step is for the Ikolaje Idiroko Council of Kingmakers (Afobaje) to meet and carry out its statutory duty of selecting a candidate from the three nominees.

Emphasising the integrity of the succession process, the statement added: “No election has taken place, and no candidate has been selected, elected, or declared as the new Oniko of Ikolaje Idiroko at this time. The process remains ongoing, in full compliance with all required protocols.”

The local government further cautioned: “Any individual or group claiming or presenting themselves or any candidate as the appointed, elected, or crowned Oniko of Ikolaje Idiroko before the formal conclusion of the process and official announcement is acting unlawfully.”

It added that such actions “could result in breaches of peace, public disorder, or violations of the law, and perpetrators will be held fully accountable.”

The council urged residents, members of the ruling house, candidates, and their supporters to remain calm and law-abiding as the legitimate selection process continues.
