LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT, POLICE REAFFIRM COMMITMENT TO SECURING GOVERNMENT-OWNED ESTATES

The Lagos State Ministry of Housing has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the security of government-owned estates through enhanced collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force.

This position was reiterated on Tuesday when the Commissioner for Housing received the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, and officers of the Command on a courtesy visit to the Ministry in Alausa, Ikeja. The visit was aimed at deepening strategic cooperation towards safeguarding housing assets and government estates across the State.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, emphasised that security remains a collective responsibility of all citizens in the State.

He said, “The Lagos State Government is resolute in its mandate to deliver affordable and sustainable shelter. The security of our estates is non-negotiable, and we will continue to partner with all security agencies under the “See Something, Say Something, Do Something’ mantra to keep our communities safe.”

While noting that, pursuant to the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) Law of 2022, the Ministry is empowered to identify and manage abandoned buildings. Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai highlighted ongoing efforts to sanitise government estates, including the removal of criminal elements and the enforcement against illegal activities like street trading and drug peddling, through collaboration with agencies such as the Nigerian Police, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other relevant stakeholders.

The Commissioner further stated that the Ministry has consistently collaborated with NAFDAC and other relevant agencies to eliminate threats within its estates. “With the LASRERA Law of 2022, we are better positioned to address the challenge of abandoned buildings. This renewed partnership with the Nigeria Police will further strengthen the protection of government assets and ensure safer living environments for our residents”, the said

In his remarks, CP Tijani Fatai emphasised the importance of engaging the Ministry as a critical stakeholder in the provision and protection of housing infrastructure. He stressed that effective policing requires a holistic approach, noting that “policing cuts across everywhere and everybody in Lagos.”

The Commissioner of Police added that the visit was intended to strengthen existing ties and identify priority areas for enhanced collaboration to secure government assets, monitor activities around public properties, and prevent the occupation of abandoned buildings by criminal elements.

According to him “While an existing relationship already exists, this visit is to reinforce that bond and chart a more strategic course. A new chapter beckons,” he stated, assuring the Ministry of the Police Force’s continued support.

CP Fatai also pledged to intensify community-based policing efforts across the State to support the Ministry’s field operations, assuring that all areas would receive adequate attention to ensure the safety of residents and protection of government assets.
