The Minister-designate for Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has dismissed reports claiming he vowed to repair Nigeria’s power grid within three months.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, Tegbe described the reports as a distortion of comments he made during his Senate screening on May 6, 2026.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, Adelabu clarified that the minister-designate only explained that timelines for power sector reforms were still under review and would depend on technical assessments and consultations with stakeholders.

“Our attention has been drawn to inaccurate media reports alleging that the Honourable Minister-designate, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, promised to fix Nigeria’s power grid within three months,” the statement said.

It continued: “This claim is a clear misrepresentation of his remarks. At his Senate screening on May 6, 2026, Mr Tegbe made no such commitment.”

According to the statement, Tegbe informed lawmakers that efforts to stabilise the national grid would begin within his first 100 days in office, while wider structural reforms in the sector could take up to a year.

The proposed reforms, his aide explained, would focus on strengthening confidence in the power sector, resolving gas supply issues, and increasing electricity metering nationwide.

During the screening, Tegbe reportedly assured senators that Nigerians would begin to notice improvements in the electricity sector.

He also pledged to stabilise the national grid, upgrade power infrastructure, improve commercial operations, and ensure accountability throughout the electricity value chain.

On electricity tariffs, the minister-designate said reforms would aim to safeguard vulnerable consumers while also promoting sustainability and boosting investor confidence.

The statement further noted that Tegbe remained committed to transparency and open engagement with the media as efforts continue to address Nigeria’s power sector challenges.

Recently, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Tegbe as Minister of Power following the departure of Adebayo Adelabu during a cabinet reshuffle announced by the Presidency.

Tegbe, an engineer and public policy expert, appeared before the Senate to outline plans for addressing major issues in the electricity sector, including grid instability, metering shortages, and infrastructure deficits.
