SANWO-OLU REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR NIGERIA’S CREATIVE INDUSTRY AT 2026 AMVCA

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday, 9th May 2026, joined top personalities from across Africa’s entertainment industry at the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards held at Eko Hotel & Suites, where he reaffirmed the State Government’s unwavering commitment to the growth of the creative and entertainment sector.
The Governor was accompanied to the event by the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, alongside other government officials, industry leaders, filmmakers, actors, producers, and creatives from across the continent.
The annual awards ceremony, widely regarded as one of Africa’s biggest platforms for celebrating excellence in film, television, and digital entertainment, once again showcased the richness of African storytelling and the immense talents shaping the continent’s creative future.
Addressing guests at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu described Lagos as the undisputed home of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, noting that the State has continued to provide an enabling environment for creative talents to flourish and compete globally.
He emphasised that the creative economy remains a strategic pillar for economic diversification, job creation, youth empowerment, and cultural promotion.
The Governor stated that his administration would continue to strengthen policies and invest initiatives that support filmmakers, content creators, and other players within the entertainment ecosystem.
He added that the growing global recognition of Nollywood and African content reflects the resilience, innovation, and creativity of Nigerian talents.
Sanwo-Olu also expressed concern over the persistent challenge of piracy, describing it as a major threat to the sustainability of the creative industry.
He called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, industry stakeholders, and private sector partners to protect intellectual property rights and preserve the future of Nollywood.
He congratulated all nominees and award winners for their exceptional contributions to the advancement of African cinema and storytelling, encouraging them to continue telling authentic African stories capable of inspiring global audiences.
The Governor further acknowledged the role of private sector organisations and development partners in supporting the steady growth of the entertainment industry, stressing that partnerships remain critical to unlocking more opportunities for young creatives.
He stated that his attendance at the prestigious event further highlights the Lagos State Government’s commitment to positioning Lagos as Africa’s foremost destination for entertainment, tourism, arts, culture, and creative enterprise.
