Asimiyu Ajibola, the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State and popularly known as Baba Isila, was attacked and shot by suspected gunmen on Wednesday night in Osogbo.

The incident has triggered a police investigation into what the state government has described as an attempted murder.

Reports indicate that the attack happened around 9:50 pm in the MDS area of Osogbo, near the Osogbo Community Bank axis, throwing residents into panic as gunshots echoed through the area.

A local source who requested anonymity said the attackers opened fire on a blue Toyota Corolla carrying Ajibola and his companions as they passed through the area.

According to the source, the gunmen pursued the vehicle and repeatedly fired shots in what appeared to be a coordinated attack.

“We were coming from the MDS area of Osogbo at about 9:50 pm when armed men suddenly chased our vehicle and fired several shots at us,” the eyewitness said.

The witness further explained that the occupants of the vehicle managed to escape and took refuge at the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters in Osogbo before the attackers fled the scene.

“We escaped to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters for safety before the attackers retreated,” he added.

Ajibola was later taken to the University of Osun Teaching Hospital in Osogbo, where he is receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

Reacting to the incident, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, condemned the attack and urged security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation.

He described the incident as unfortunate and insisted that those responsible must be brought to justice.

Alimi also called for a professional and unbiased investigation, noting that early indications suggest possible political motivations behind the attack.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Osun State Police Command confirmed that a full investigation had been launched into the shooting.

Police spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said two armed men on a motorcycle allegedly carried out the attack along the MDS area of Osogbo.

He added that police operatives responded swiftly, evacuated the victim for medical attention, and deployed tactical teams to track down the suspects.

According to the Command, medical personnel confirmed that Ajibola is in stable condition and responding to treatment.

Recovered evidence from the scene is currently being forensically examined as efforts continue to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the attack and ordered a high-level investigation into the incident, directing all relevant units to ensure the suspects are arrested and prosecuted.
