ABUJA — The Senate yesterday called on the Federal Government to step up efforts and deploy all necessary resources to secure the immediate rescue of teachers, pupils, and students abducted by terrorists in Oyo and Borno States.
The appeal came as suspected gunmen on Tuesday night reportedly attacked the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) office in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and carted away firearms belonging to officers on duty.
Separately, the family of former Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, confirmed the abduction of his younger sister, Mrs. Olaide Busayo John-Paul, alongside her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, by armed men in Ibadan.
The development has sparked widespread concern, with prominent Nigerians including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) urging urgent government action to rescue victims still held by terrorists more than two weeks after their abduction.
It will be recalled that on May 15, 2026, over 40 teachers, pupils, and students of Baptist Nursery and Primary School (Yawota), Community Grammar School (Esiele), L.A. Primary School, Ogbomoso, and surrounding communities in Oyo State were abducted.
The Senate strongly condemned the incident during plenary, describing it as a barbaric attack on education and national security, and observed a minute’s silence in honour of those killed.
Lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to strengthen the Safe Schools Initiative through improved surveillance, intelligence gathering, and security deployment around schools and vulnerable communities nationwide.
The motion, titled “The Abduction of School Children, Teachers and a Toddler in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State,” was sponsored by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari (APC, Oyo North).
During debate, lawmakers expressed deep concern over rising insecurity, with Senator Adams Oshiomhole calling for stronger oversight of security spending and accountability within the Armed Forces.
Other senators, including Senator Sani Musa, also emphasized the need for transparency in the management of security funds and better welfare for frontline troops.
Presiding Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, commended security agencies for their efforts but stressed the need for sustained and collective action involving all arms of government to defeat insecurity.
Meanwhile, gunmen also reportedly attacked the Nigeria Immigration Service office in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Tuesday night, disarming officers and making away with firearms. Authorities are yet to confirm the exact number of weapons stolen.
In another incident, the family of former Minister Adebayo Adelabu confirmed the abduction of his sister and her twin sons in Ibadan, prompting a swift response from security agencies who have launched investigations and search operations.
Political leaders and stakeholders, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and the NLC, have condemned the wave of abductions, calling for urgent and decisive government action to secure the release of victims and address the worsening insecurity across the country.
