AFCON 2027 QUALIFIERS: GUINEA-BISSAU STUN SUPER EAGLES 3-0

Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered their first defeat in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign after losing 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in Bissau.

Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Álvaro Djaló scored for the hosts as Guinea-Bissau secured all three points in their second Group L fixture.

Djú opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a curling finish into the far corner after finding space inside Nigeria’s defence.

Nigeria struggled to create clear-cut opportunities despite enjoying spells of possession, with Frank Onyeka firing into the side netting in the 28th minute. The Super Eagles went into the break trailing 1-0.

Head coach Éric Chelle made two changes at half-time, introducing Moses Usor for Onyeka and Moses Simon for Taiwo Awoniyi as Nigeria searched for an equaliser.

Akor Adams came close to restoring parity in the 60th minute, but his header was saved by Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Manuel Embadje.

Guinea-Bissau doubled their advantage six minutes later when Baldé cut inside from the left and curled his effort off the post and into the net.

Chelle later brought on Tolu Arokodare for Ademola Lookman, but Nigeria failed to find a way back into the contest.

Djaló completed the scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time to seal a 3-0 victory for Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria had opened their qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar but now face Tanzania in their next AFCON 2027 qualifier during the November international window.

Before then, the Super Eagles will take on Russia in an international friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on October 6.
