BAUCHI GOVERNOR ORDERS SECURITY FORCES TO CRACK DOWN ON CRIMINALS, ILLEGAL MINERS

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has directed troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Safe Haven/Operation Enduring Peace, to intensify intelligence gathering and ensure that criminal elements operating in the state are decisively dealt with.
The governor gave the directive on Tuesday while receiving the newly deployed General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Jos, and Commander of Operation Safe Haven/Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Maxwell Dangana, during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Bauchi.
Mohammed said Bauchi must not lose the relative peace it currently enjoys to criminal activities, assuring the military of the state government’s continued support in combating insecurity.
He identified illegal mining as a major source of funding for terrorism and other criminal activities, warning that criminal syndicates were exploiting mining operations to fuel violence in rural communities.
The governor praised the Nigerian Army for its sacrifices in protecting lives and property, noting that soldiers deserve appreciation for leaving their families behind to safeguard the nation.
He expressed concern over the activities of bandits and illegal miners, saying they were displacing residents, preventing farmers from accessing their farmlands and threatening the state’s food security and economic stability.
Mohammed called for stronger collaboration among neighbouring states to dismantle bandit networks and illegal mining cartels, stressing that intelligence gathering should be strengthened to identify everyone involved in criminal activities.
He also warned that no individual should be spared, regardless of status or personal relationship, declaring that anyone found engaging in illegal mining or other criminal acts should face the full weight of the law.
Earlier, Major General Dangana said he was in Bauchi as part of his familiarisation tour following his appointment as Commander of Operation Safe Haven and Operation Enduring Peace two weeks ago.
According to him, the visit was aimed at assessing the security situation within his area of responsibility, identifying operational challenges and reviewing strategies to improve the effectiveness of ongoing security operations.
