DONALD DUKE CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION TO REVERSE NIGERIA’S DECLINE

Former Cross River State Governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Donald Duke, has called for urgent action to address Nigeria’s worsening economic, security and governance challenges, warning that the country risks a deeper crisis if its current trajectory is not reversed.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday, Duke said Nigeria requires immediate intervention to prevent what he described as a looming national disaster.
He attributed the country’s challenges to a struggling economy, poor governance and persistent insecurity, including terrorism, banditry and kidnapping, arguing that these issues are symptoms of deeper structural failures.
According to Duke, Nigeria has experienced more politics than governance over the past two decades, resulting in weak institutions and limited economic growth.
He also cited the recent controversy surrounding the alleged Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council and its purported Director-General, Adeniyi Adeyemi, as an example of lapses in governance and institutional oversight.
Questioning the country’s economic policies, Duke said high interest rates continue to hinder growth and make meaningful economic expansion difficult.
The former governor said his decision to contest the 2027 presidential election was driven by concern over the country’s direction and a desire to contribute to finding lasting solutions.
Duke also called for greater unity among opposition political parties, arguing that a fragmented opposition weakens democratic competition and reduces the chances of presenting a credible alternative to the ruling party.
He stressed the need for leaders capable of bringing together diverse political interests in the national interest, describing Nigeria’s current situation as critical.
Reflecting on his time as governor of Cross River State, Duke said leadership should be judged by the ability to leave institutions and communities better than they were found.
He added that governing a country as diverse as Nigeria requires competence over political loyalty, urging future leaders to assemble capable teams focused on delivering results rather than rewarding political supporters.
