BORNO COUNCIL CHAIRMAN ACCUSED OF FIRING SHOTGUN, DEATH THREAT

The Chairman of Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, Umar Lawan Sheriff, has been accused of firing a double-barrelled shotgun and threatening to kill a man during a confrontation at the residence of a former state governor.
The allegation was contained in a report by security analyst Zagazola Makama, which said the incident involved a man identified as Sanusi Othman, who was reportedly staying at the residence.
According to the report, the disagreement allegedly began after Sheriff questioned the presence of Othman and made a remark linking him to drug use. Othman reportedly objected and subsequently sent the chairman a WhatsApp message warning him against associating his name with drugs.
A separate WhatsApp exchange dated September 3 was also reportedly referenced in the account, with Othman allegedly warning Sheriff and ending the message with, “I’M NOT YOUR MATE.”
An eyewitness reportedly said Sheriff later returned to the residence in his vehicle, brought out a double-barrelled firearm and fired into the air, causing people at the scene to panic and flee.
The chairman was further accused of turning the firearm towards Othman and threatening to kill him, prompting the man to reportedly escape from the scene.
A video that later circulated on social media showed a man displaying what was described as a spent red shotgun cartridge allegedly recovered from the scene. The man claimed that shots had been fired at them and presented the cartridge as evidence.
The report further alleged that the incident remained largely out of public view for several weeks, while people close to the chairman, including associates and lawyers, reportedly attempted to resolve the matter privately instead of immediately involving security agencies.
According to the sources cited in the report, intermediaries allegedly appealed to the victim and others involved not to take the matter to the media or security agencies, citing possible consequences for the chairman, including the loss of his position. They were also reportedly asked to consider people who depended on the chairman.
The sources further claimed that Sheriff was portrayed as having made a mistake and regretting his actions, with efforts made to settle the matter privately.
However, the allegations have not been independently established, and it remains unclear whether a formal complaint has been lodged with the police or other security agencies. An independent investigation would be required to establish what happened, whether a firearm was discharged and whether any offence was committed.
