BREAKING: NFF PRESIDENT GUSAU, BOARD MEMBERS RESIGN

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Gusau, has resigned from office.
Gusau announced his resignation during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, according to the Super Eagles news account on X, @SSE_NGA.
Several members of the NFF Executive Committee board also reportedly resigned alongside the federation’s president.
The development comes amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s recent football setbacks, particularly the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Falcons missed out on the tournament after suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the qualifying play-off, marking the first time Nigeria will fail to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The women’s national team had also been eliminated from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage after losing to Cameroon.
The Super Eagles equally failed to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding to the mounting pressure on the NFF leadership.
The football federation has also faced scrutiny over its management of a ₦17 billion Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024.
A fact-finding committee report had further raised allegations that some NFF board members and officials influenced invitations to national teams for financial benefits.
Gusau’s resignation comes barely a month before the NFF elective congress, scheduled to hold on September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The latest development is expected to trigger further discussions over the leadership and administration of Nigerian football as the country seeks to rebuild its national teams and restore confidence in the NFF.
More details are expected to emerge following the resignation.
