NLC GENERAL SECRETARY EMMANUEL UGBOAJA DIES AT 60

The General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Emmanuel Ugboaja, has died at the age of 60 after a prolonged illness.
The circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear as of Thursday.
NLC President Joe Ajaero announced Ugboaja’s death to members of the Congress National Executive Council during their ongoing meeting in Enugu State. He reportedly read a letter from the deceased’s family informing delegates of his passing.
Ugboaja, a lawyer and veteran trade unionist, had served as NLC General Secretary since August 2019, succeeding Peter Ozo-Eson.
In the position, he coordinated the administrative and strategic affairs of the labour centre, including engagements with affiliate unions, government and employers, as well as negotiations and nationwide mobilisation.
His tenure featured several major labour disputes and negotiations over workers’ wages, welfare and economic policies, including the implementation of the N30,000 national minimum wage approved in 2019.
Born on May 15, 1966, Ugboaja studied Law at the University of Calabar and graduated in 1987. He practised privately for about four years before joining the trade union movement in 1993.
He began his union career with the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees, where he served as General Secretary from 2000 to 2005.
He later worked with the Alliance for Credible Elections before joining the NLC Secretariat in 2009.
Ugboaja’s death comes as organised labour continues engagements with the government over minimum wage implementation, workers’ welfare and the impact of economic reforms.
