DOMESTIC DISPUTE: KOGI POLICE ARREST MAN OVER ALLEGED ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE OF WIFE

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man, Jacob Irewa, over an alleged attempted culpable homicide involving his wife, Berida Irawo, at Oworo Estate, Felele, in Lokoja.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, stating that the incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026.
According to the statement, the B Division Surveillance Team in Felele received a report of the incident at about 8:30 p.m. and promptly mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the incident stemmed from a domestic disagreement after the victim allegedly burnt some of the suspect’s clothes which she believed he no longer used, without his consent.
The suspect subsequently threatened her, fetched petrol from his motorcycle and proceeded to set her ablaze,” she said.
She said the victim survived the attack and was currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.
According to her, “The suspect, in his statement to the Police, admitted to setting his wife ablaze. The Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather further evidence.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the incident and reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for violence, particularly domestic violence.
He urged members of the public to seek lawful means of resolving domestic disputes and avoid actions capable of endangering lives.
He said the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution upon conclusion of the investigation.
“The Kogi State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that persons responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice,” the PPRO added.
