Nigerian boxer Aishat Gbadamosi has expressed confidence in her boxing career despite suffering a controversial defeat at the African Boxing Elite Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, insisting that she remains determined to improve and move forward.
Gbadamosi lost 3-1 to Algeria’s Douaa Rouaz in the women’s featherweight (54–57kg) category, a decision that sparked disagreement among some spectators who believed the Nigerian deserved a better outcome.
Rather than dwell on the defeat, Gbadamosi reportedly watched a replay of the bout on her phone immediately after the fight to assess her performance and identify areas for improvement.
The boxer described the championship as a valuable learning experience, noting that it was only her second international competition following an earlier outing in Ghana.
She also expressed pride in representing Nigeria at the continental tournament, describing the opportunity as a privilege.
“This is an experience I will cherish for a very long time. I am not disappointed. I will keep moving forward in my boxing career. I am a boxer, and I was born a boxer,” she said.
Gbadamosi maintained that she would use the experience to strengthen her skills and improve her future performances, adding that her responsibility was to give her best inside the ring while leaving officiating decisions to the technical officials.
“I believe in my ability, and I will take this experience to improve myself. My responsibility is to fight and give my best inside the ring. The technical officials have their own responsibilities,” she explained.
Meanwhile, Gbadamosi was not the only Nigerian boxer involved in a disputed result on the day, as Abdulramon Abdulwahab also suffered defeat in the men’s light middleweight (65–70kg) category.
Abdulwahab lost 4-1 to Egypt’s Hekal Ahmed, with reports indicating that some Angolan boxers questioned the verdict at ringside.
The two disputed decisions have raised concerns among some observers about the standard of officiating at the championship. However, there is no independently established evidence of wrongdoing by the judges, and the scorecards have not been reviewed.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Boxing Federation had yet to issue an official statement on the disputed results.
