The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Monday met with the Secretary-General of the International Criminal Police Organisation, INTERPOL, Valdecy Urquiza, in Lyon, France, as Nigeria moves to strengthen international police cooperation and enhance its fight against transnational crime.
The meeting was held during Disu’s maiden official visit to the INTERPOL General Secretariat in Lyon, according to a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.
The discussions centred on ways to deepen collaboration in key areas, including cybercrime, counter-terrorism, financial crimes, organised crime, fugitive tracking and intelligence sharing.

The Inspector-General and senior INTERPOL officials also examined the effective utilisation of INTERPOL databases and other policing tools to support law enforcement operations.

According to the statement, the engagement provided an opportunity to assess Nigeria’s participation in INTERPOL-backed initiatives and identify additional areas for technical and operational cooperation.
The proposed areas of collaboration include strengthening criminal intelligence analysis, improving cross-border investigations and disrupting transnational criminal networks.
The Nigeria Police Force said the visit was part of broader efforts to build Nigeria’s capacity to combat crimes that operate across national boundaries.
The statement added that the force remains committed to expanding its partnership with INTERPOL and other international law enforcement agencies by leveraging intelligence, technology and global policing capabilities to address emerging security threats.
Disu was accompanied by the Head of INTERPOL Nigeria and National Central Bureau, Abuja, AIG Olaolu Adegbite; Director of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, AIG Ezima Akaninyene Ifem; Head of the Nigeria Police Counter Terrorism Unit, AIG Akoh Benedict Gabriel; and INTERPOL Africa Committee Member, CP Ojajuni Olubode.
The meeting comes as INTERPOL continues to support international operations targeting organised and cyber-enabled crime. In August, the organisation disclosed that an eight-month operation targeting West African organised crime groups resulted in 58 arrests and the identification of 263 suspects across 23 countries.
INTERPOL has also collaborated with Nigerian law enforcement agencies on operations targeting financial crimes, cybercrime, drug trafficking and human trafficking.
